5 Health Benefits of Matcha Green Tea

Green tea is brewed and consumed all over the world because of its remarkable health benefits. But what about matcha green tea? Matcha is essentially another variety of green tea and holds the same powerful benefits as regular green tea.

HISTORY

The practice of preparing and consuming powdered tea such as matcha was first made popular by Chinese Zen Buddhist monks over 900 years ago. This ritual was shared with the Japanese in the 11th century and it was used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies from there on out. Matcha is grown and prepared differently from regular green tea. Matcha is shade-grown whereas green tea is grown in the sun during the first few weeks of harvest. By growing matcha in the shade, the chlorophyll content level is increased.

HOW MATCHA IS MADE

Matcha is made by harvesting young tea leaves and grinding them into a powder form. It will appear bright green once it is done. The powder is then mixed with hot water and then whisked. Green tea leaves are infused in water and then removed, but with matcha, the entire tea leaf is consumed. Both green tea and matcha have caffeine but matcha has a larger amount of it. Just don’t overdo it if you are highly sensitive to caffeine. Matcha is highly concentrated with antioxidants, so one cup of matcha green tea can be three times more beneficial than green tea.
